IELTS Test Knowledge - Basic Info

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an English language proficiency exam which measures the ability of test-takers to communicate in the four basic language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

The IELTS is managed by three main institutions: the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL). This is important to understand in order to prepare for what is essentially an examination of British and not American English.

Many students who have prepared for or appeared for the TOEFL iBT are surprised when they face difficulties understanding accents and expressions used by British speakers in the IELTS. This is why thorough preparation, at a language school or through self-study, is so essential for success in this exam.

There are two versions of the IELTS exam: general and academic. Test-takers must know in advance which one is needed for their purposes as the scores are not interchangeable. Each test lasts two hours and forty-five minutes.

Broadly speaking, the IELTS is taken by those who wish to study, live, or work in a country...

IELTS Speaking Test Ideas and Tips
By Paul Brown (MA CELTA)

Help with how to pass the speaking test in IELTS. ‘Talk about your favourite restaurant’ The speech will be separated into fact and opinion and operate around the framework of introduction, body and conclusion. Introduction Today, I am going to talk about my favourite restaurant. Body Fact ( What, Where, When, Who ) 1.What is the name of the restaurant? 2.Where is it located? 3.When do you go there? 4.Who do you go with? The candidate should answer these questions as the first part of the Body and therefore provide some ‘Fact’ to go with the ‘Opinion’ which will make up the second part of the speech. My favourite restaurant is Lucky Burger. It is located on Monivong Boulevard in the centre of Phnom Penh near the Central Market. I usually go there on Monday evenings at about seven o’clock for dinner with my family. My favourite dish is fried chicken and french fries. Transition from ‘Fact’ to ‘Opinion’. Now the Fact part of the speech is over and the candidate now needs to use a transition structure to show the change from ‘Fact’ to ‘Opinion’. I like Lucky Burger for many reasons which I will explain as follows:- Opinion ( Why?) 5. Why you like it? Now the speech focuses on the most important part of any speech, the description of why you like it. This is the most important part of any speech and must contain good reasons as well as good adjectival usage to describe the restaurant appropriately. a) food – Western, clean, delicious, tasty b) service- quick, efficient c) price- reasonable, reasonably-priced d) staff-friendly, polite, helpful e) atmosphere- pleasant Here suitable Nouns are chosen which express the reasons why the candidate likes the restaurant. These Nouns are then complemented by suitable Adjectives, which provide the reasons to support the ideas. First, Lucky Burger has Western food, which is very clean and delicious. Second, the price is reasonable. For example, I can buy a hamburger meal with fries and coca cola for only 1usd. Third, it has extremely quick service. For instance, I never have to wait for a long time to get my order and usually receive my food within 5 minutes. Next, the staff are very polite, helpful and friendly. In this way, they are always smiling and make me feel welcome every time I go there. Last, it has an extremely pleasant atmosphere. In this regard, it has big comfortable seats and is fully air-conditioned. Conclusion To sum up, Lucky Burger is my favourite restaurant because it has tasty food, reasonable price, fast service, friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere. It is fantastic. Here the main points are summarized and the speech ends on a positive note by using a positive opinion adjective at the end.

Review of 'The Adventure of English', Melvyn Bragg, Hodder & Stoughton

For a good, highly readable overview of how English developed and where it may be going, Melvyn Bragg's book, based on the TV series of the same name, does the job. Bragg traces the roots of English back to the Frisian and other Germanic languages of those who invaded Britain from the 5th century onwards - the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. He follows the growth of what have become the varied forms of modern English, not only through the familiar paths of the Norman invasion, Chaucer, Shakespeare and so on, but also through looking at other influences on English - the words of the Wild West in America, the Creole languages of the Caribbean, or the vocabulary the British brought from India. Indeed, the lists of words can become overwhelming at times.

His view of English is in some ways very democratic: the role of the ordinary people and particularly the oppressed is stressed, whether through the survival and transformation into Middle English of Anglo-Saxon under Norman French rule or the advance of Australian English. His account of Wycliffe...
